My great grandmother Queen Elena of Italy. Kindnes My great grandmother Queen Elena of Italy. Kindness personified, the daughter of King Nikola of Montenegro she had been educated in St Petersburg at the Smolny Institute and was the goddaughter of Alexander III. Her sister Zorca married crown Prince Peter of Serbia and her two sisters, Militza and Anastasia became grand duchesses of Russia and actually discovered Rasputin and introduced him to the Empress! Twice the recipient of the Vatican's highest decorations for acts of charity, the golden rose, Queen Elena was known in Italy as "la regina buona", The kind Queen because she devoted her life to help the poor. She built numerous mountain refuges with her own money in the region of Sant' Anna di Valdieri for the mountaineers when they moved the sheeps and cows around at the change of season. During the two wars she organized many hospitals for the wounded including in the Quirinal Palace. There is a procedure taking place at the moment in the Vatican for her beatification. My mother remembers that she had healing powers and that when she was sick as a child, Queen Elena would put her hands over her and after a while she would feel better. When my great great grandmother Grand Duchess Vladimir was stuck in the Crimea trying to escape the Russian revolution Queen Elena sent a boat to rescue her and saved her life and the lives of about fifty people of her entourage. My grandfather (her son) King Umberto II said "just a few days before dying, from her bed, she continued to pull the strings of her charitable works: every day of her existence saw an act of kindness. She possessed the great gift of loving and make herself loved by all". #queenofitaly #europeanroyalty #saint #rolemodel #kindness #glamour #royalstyle

My great great-grandmother the first queen of Ital My great great-grandmother the first queen of Italy, Queen Margherita. One of the greatest intellectuals of her time, famous for her salon and immensely popular for her hard work and philanthropy. Her marriage was not a happy one but she was smart enough to decide that as queen she would be the king’s partner in business, working tirelessly for the prestige of Italy and the monarchy, ending up being very good friends with her husband. She always promoted everything made in Italy so she never bought clothes or jewelry in Paris like many royals did in those days. She was the driving force behind the development of the Italian fashion and jewelry industries. Here she wears her famous tiara made by Musy in Torino, the court jeweler. Her name in Latin signified pearl and her collection of pearls was the greatest in Europe thanks in great part to her husband who felt guilty for his numerous affairs and was always gifting her pearls. She had a passion for cars and it was she who introduced St Christopher as the patron saint of drivers and transportation. Her favorite residence was the heavenly hunting lodge of Stupinigi built by Juvara in the early 18th century outside of Turin. You can see on the roof in the center the statue of a gigantic bronze stag. #reginamargherita #stupinigi. #royalpalace #europeanroyalty #princedimitri #queenofitaly #pearls #europeanhistory #intellectual #history #nostalgia #glamour #stchristopher #jewelry
Bringing black and white pictures to life !! Charm Bringing black and white pictures to life !!
Charming holiday photo in 1899 at Wolfsgarten in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, the home of Empress Alexandra of Russia. From the top: Grand Duke Boris Vladimirovich of Russia, my great grandfather Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark, Emperor Nicholas II of Russia, Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich of Russia , Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia, Grand Duke Ernest Louis of Hesse who was the brother of tsarina Alexandra, Grand Duchess Victoria Melita of Hesse, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia.

Two years after this picture was taken Ernest and Victoria divorced. In 1905 Victoria Melita married Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich, my great grandmother’s brother, thus becoming Grand Duchess Victoria Feodorovna of Russia.

Tsar Nicholas II and my great grandfather Prince Nicholas of Greece were first cousins (the King of Greece was the brother of the dowager empress of Russia) they were known in the family as Russian Nicky and Greek Nicky and adored each other. When my great grandfather married grand duchess Helen, also a first cousin of Tsar Nicholas (Their fathers were brothers) he had a lovely house built for them in Athens where they went to live. It is today the Italian embassy. This photo was taken with a Kodak camera, the most advanced camera in those days. The Romanoffs loved new technology and were avid photographers as were many other royals who started the tradition of sending Christmas cards with photos! Today they would be so fascinated by computers, iPhones and Instagram and this new technology of coloring old photos.
Wolfsgarten is an enchanting castle that still belongs to my Hesse cousins. In one of the living rooms there is a window where you can see the signatures of all the people in this photo and every other cousins who visited. There still is the Faberge pen with a diamond tip that they used to sign on the glass panel. #princedimitri #chic #nostalgia #romanov #empress #tsar #alexandrafeodorovna #royalty #insta

Grand Duchess Vladimir, born Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, joined the Romanov Dynasty in 1874 when she married Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, uncle to the last Emperor, #NicholasII. A prominent hostess in Saint Petersburg, she was known as the "grandest of all the grand duchesses”.

Her #jewelrycollection was the stuff of legend. In 1902, #ConsueloVanderbilt (the dollar princess who had married the 9th Duke of Marlborough and was no stranger to important jewels herself…) recalled visiting her in Russia: ‘She had a majestic personality, but could be both gracious and charming. After dinner she showed me her jewels set out in glass cases in her dressing room. There were endless parures of diamonds, emeralds, rubies and pearls..”

The Duchess was not only one of the Cartiers’ best clients in the early 20th century, she also became a friend of #LouisCartier. It was through her – and her famous Christmas bazaar in St Petersburg – that Cartier became the jeweller of choice for the #Romanovs, then the wealthiest dynasty in the world. When Louis asked to borrow her famous 1874 diamond and pearl #tiara by court jeweler, #Bolin (top picture), she agreed with pleasure and lent it to him in 1911 for six months. Over that time, he studied it closely, in awe of its beauty and craftmanship, and it would go on to inspire him to create magnificent new jewels, like the #LeedsTiara in 1913 (bottom picture) for Nancy Leeds, the future #PrincessAnastasia of Greece and Denmark.

It was such fun speaking to @Prince.Dimitri about this and many other stories from the intertwining lives of our ancestors in our recent webinar. As the g-g-grandson of #GrandDuchessVladimir, he took us behind the scenes of the opulent lives of the Romanovs to the real people in those palaces living through that devastating revolution.

Many of you have been asking about a recording– will keep you updated once that is ready for viewing. And for those who have been asking about Prince Dimitri’s fantastic book #OnceUponADiamond (packed full of many more family stories and previously unpublished images), the link is in his bio. It would make a great holiday gift! #tiaras

In 2003, this 478 ct #sapphire sold for CHF 1.9mn at a Christies’ auction. 104 years earlier, it was the star of the show in a post-WW1 Cartier jewellery exhibition in Louis Cartier’s favourite seaside town of San Sebastián. Back then, it attracted significant interest but failed to sell: when Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain tried it on, her husband remarked of the 1.25mn franc price tag: “Only the nouveaux riches can afford such luxuries…we kings are the nouveaux pauvres of today!”

A couple of years later, however, it was a king who ended up buying it: King Ferdinand of Romania. He gave it to his glamorous wife, Queen Marie(wearing it here in 1924 portrait by de Lazslo), as a coronation gift and she wore it often, especially as it went so well with her newly acquired Cartier Vladimir #sapphiretiara (one of the many Romanov jewels smuggled out of Russia during the revolution and sold to fund a life in exile).

As queen, Marie was one of the first royals to become a modern celebrity, thanks to her brilliant negotiating skills at the Treaty of Versailles, her willingness to engage with people of all backgrounds and her readiness to publish books and articles. When she visited the US in 1926 to “see the country, meet the people and put Romania on the map”, #PierreCartier invited her to #CartierNewYork (he seemed “very eager that I should visit his shop”). Much to his delight, she agreed and the visit made it into all the papers. But that wasn’t enough for savvy businessman Pierre: determined to ensure the royal magic remained long after the press had died away, he made a plaque for the chair the Queen had sat on, reading: “On this chair sat her Majesty, Queen Marie of Rumania, when she paid a visit to the House of Cartier.” He instinctively understood that by impressing a potential client, he was halfway to a sale.

For those interested in hearing and seeing more, you’re welcome to join for Thursday’s webinar when @prince.dimitri and I will be sharing more behind-the-scenes family stories about some seriously impressive #royaljewels and those who wore them...

Repost from @creatingcartier ... With many of us b Repost from @creatingcartier ... With many of us back in lockdown and the airwaves dominated by confusing election news, I thought perhaps some dramatic bejewelled stories might provide a welcome distraction. I’m so excited for this month’s talk when I’ll be joined by @prince.dimitri (the g-g-g-grandson of Tsar Alexander II) for a uniquely personal journey back in time to the opulent palaces of pre-revolutionary Russia.

Diamonds and high drama is a beguiling mix at the best of times but in the context of the Romanovs it becomes intoxicating. This image shows one of Cartier’s best clients of the early 20th century: #grandduchess Vladimir, wearing her Cartier #tiara and #devantdecorsage. Behind her is an original letter I dug up during that decade I spent down the rabbit holes of family research, written by a Cartier rep in 1908 requesting an audience with the #Russianroyals (it clearly did the trick). I’ve been fascinated by #grandduchessvladimir for years now: how she led the St Petersburg social scene before being forced to flee her country, how her Romanov emeralds ended up adorning #barbarahutton and how, decades after her death, a multi-million dollar cache of long-lost jewels were discovered in two pillowcases in the Swedish ministry of foreign affairs. No surprise then that when the opportunity came up to speak to someone directly connected to her extraordinary tale (Prince Dimitri is her g-g-grandson), I jumped at it...

We hope you can join us for this behind-the-scenes webinar on 19 Nov as we share intertwining stories of #thecartiers and #theromanovs from the perspective of both families. Yes, there will there be gems aplenty: enormous #sapphires , emerald necklaces, ruby tiaras and rock crystal #bandeaus - but in a way that’s just the icing on the cake. Because as you’ll see, the history we’ve uncovered, with all its twists and turns, is almost more like a Bond film than real life: spies and smuggling, marriages and murders, glamorous costume balls and secret arrests, all set against the fairytale façade of a snow-filled #StPetersburg . Details in her bio, where you can click on the link and register at @creatingcartier

From left to right the last empress of Russia, my From left to right the last empress of Russia, my great grandmother Grand duchess Hellen, her mother the grand Duchess Vladimir and Tsar Nicholas II. The grand duchess Vladimir was the one who convinced Princess Alix of Hesse to convert to orthodoxy before marrying the tsar. October 19th 1983 my family and I were received by October 19th 1983 my family and I were received by Pope John Paul II in occasion of the donation of the Holy Shroud of Turin that had been given to him by my grandfather, King Umberto II when he died. Here I am age 25 😇
The holy Shroud of Turin is the oldest Christian relic in the world. It was discovered in the eighth century A.D. in the Holy Land, it then reappeared in France in 1353 as a sacred relic when it was presented by Goffredo Di Charny to the church of Lirey. Right away it's authenticity was contested by Pope Clement VI. The shroud became property of my family the House of Savoy In 1453 when it was bought by the Duke of Savoy. In 1578 Duke Emanuele Filiberto transferred it to Turin that had become the capital of the Duchy. May 28th 1898 it was photographed for the first time revealing its extraordinary characteristic: The image on the shroud like a photographic negative revealed a man that had been crucified, hit, his side pierced by a lance and crowned with a crown of thorns! There were also blood stains. During the 20th century it went through numerous scientific analysis and tests and until today there are still intense discussions in the scientific and religious communities about its authenticity.
We stayed half an hour with the Pope and I was very impressed by his charisma and intense mysticism especially when he allowed us to pray with him for a few minutes at the end. He gave each one of us a blessed rosary and I still have mine next to my bed. #glam #photooftheday #photography #fabulous #pope #popejohnpaulii #princedimitri #instagood #instalike #instaphoto #l4l #love #like4like #f4follow #follow4follow #history#spiritual #mystical #catholic #pope
